Southwest Florida International Airport - All Information on Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW)

Southwest Florida International Airport is an international airport located just southeast of Fort Myers in the unincorporated Lee County in Florida, United States and it is owned by the county while Lee County Port Authority, LCPA, operates it.

The airport’s IATA code is RSW and the ICAO code is KRSW. The airport is also well-known as Fort Myers Airport.

The airport served 5,978,414 passengers in 2020, a decrease from 2019 when they served 10,225,180 passengers, which is the most in the airport’s history. The decrease was due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The airport sits on more than 13,000 acres making it the third-largest airport in the USA based on land size. 6,000 acres of the land it sits on has however been conserved as swamp lands and has been set aside for environmental mitigation.

The construction of the airport began in 1980 after it was clear that Page Field, which was serving the commercial flights in the region up until then, was no longer sufficient and it was impractical to expand it at the location it was at.

RSW opened on May 14, 1983 under the name of Southwest Florida Regional Airport. Delta Air Lines operated the first flight. Ten years later the airport was renamed Southwest Florida International Airport since it had been serving international flights since 1984.

The airport’s original terminal was located on the north side of the single runway. Even though the terminal was expanded it soon became too small and it exceeded its annual capacity of 3 million passengers in 1988 already. By 2004 the airport served almost 7 million passengers.

The new terminal, called Midfield Terminal Complex, opened in September of 2005 with three concourses and 28 gates and the possibility to expand with another two concourses and more 30 gates is there if needed.

The airport serves as a hub for Western Global Airlines.

The single runway is made of asphalt and is 12,000 ft/3,658 m long.
